The Creative Writing Department at Kwantlen University College

Newsflash!

Write (better) at Kwantlen University College--with a minor in Creative Writing.

The Creative Writing Department at Kwantlen University College offers a full range of courses in first, second and third year, both face-to-face and online, in Surrey, Langley, and Richmond. In the first year, students study fiction, poetry and screenwriting; in second year, students may work on selected projects, such as a book of poetry, or a collection of short stories started earlier in their studies; and in third-year, students enroll in advanced, genre-specific courses offered on rotation.

Fourth-year Creative Nonfiction and fourth year Advanced Screenplay will be offered in the spring term of 2007.

Our two-year Associate of Arts Degree in Creative Writing is fully transferable to other universities’ third-year writing programs. We are working toward a full B.F.A in Creative Writing and will keep you updated as to our progress.

In our courses, students study theory and structure, as well as workshop their original work. While students appreciate that our courses are intellectually rigorous, they tell us they are also fun and personally rewarding.

Students who take creative writing at Kwantlen develop critical thinking skills. They read contemporary writing, or, in the case of screenwriting, watch and analyze movies. They learn to articulate and organize their thoughts clearly on paper. Whether a student goes on to become a writer, or takes this as a university-transfer elective, as many of our students do, what they learn serves them well in future English courses, and in work situations requiring confidence and verbal dexterity.

We welcome students from around the province to enroll in our online writing courses.
