- Special Interest Groups. Requires password to access.
Before you start using the Discussion Groups, please take a moment to review the policies D.1 Information & Educational Usage and G.2 Human Rights which govern appropriate use of electronic communications at Kwantlen including newsgroups / discussion groups. It is the duty of employees to use these newsgroups / discussion groups responsibly. The University College does not condone and will not tolerate behaviour which may undermine the dignity, self-esteem and productivity of any student or employee. In the event that the newsgroups are being used to access or distribute materials that contravene Human Rights Legislation and our Human Rights Policy, Kwantlen could be held liable for having failed to prevent the creation of a hostile work environment. As the owner of the site, the University College is also liable for defamation damages. In addition, employees taking part in the offending material's distribution chain (the sender or the re-sender) could also be held liable for their action.
Discussion databases offer some very nice additional features including:
- access from home via the Web
- interest profiles ("Notify me when anyone posts a message on this topic")
- author profiles ("Notify me when this person posts a message")
- My Favourites (bookmarking postings you refer back to repeatedly)
- An option to convert your interest profile into a subscription (so you can receive real-time updates on your Welcome Page. For more information read "Database subscriptions" in the Lotus Notes Client Help).
- You'll be able to delete and edit your own postings at a later date.
- For more information, consult Help > Help Topics, Help > About This Database, and Help > Using This Database
There are some differences to be aware of:
- Web: Like Lotus Notes Mail over the Web, a web user will be asked to approve the installation of an applet.
- Web: Alas, also like web e-mail, the discussion databases work at their best in IE (More specifically: in browsers using a version of SunJDK earlier than 1.3. ie. Netscape v4.7, but not v7.0. And not Mozilla 1.2.1)
- Web: The databases are open to Kwantlen employees only; we'll have to sign in.
- Lotus Notes desktop client: When you select the "My Favourites" for the first time it creates what appears to be a second "My Favourites" folder. The first one is actually an action button that creates a local copy of the "My Favourites" folder.
